on the parables deal with fewer than that number, roughly three or four dozen.6 An answer to the question of how many parables there are from Jesus is not easy to come by. For example, are the sayings of Jesus about not placing a patch of new cloth on old clothes and not putting new wine in old wineskins (Mark 2:21–22//Matt 9:16–17//Luke 5:36–38) to be classified as parables? Neither Mark nor Matthew calls them such, but Luke does (5:36). Some interpreters include them in their lists of parables,
